Death ClaimsBainbridge's Oldest Resident Henry C. Walley, 92, oldest resident of Bainbridge, died at 3:55 a.m. Thursday at his home following an illness of three weeks. A 66-year member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, the nonagenaian could remember Civil War days, although he never saw a rebel soldier. "When Morgan's men flew through, I stayed in the house, I was so scared", he once remarked.
Born Sept. 26, 1859, in Bainbridge, he was the son of David and Melissa Walley. In 1888 he married Emma Atkins, who predeceased him. Seven brothers and sisters also predeceased him. Surviving are two daughters, Grace Walley, at home, and Mrs. Miriam Heaton of Springfield; two grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Bainbridge Methodist Church and had worked as a plasterer, railroad worker and clerk. After being employed in Chillicothe as a plasterer, he farmed for several years, and then worked as a fireman on the D.T. & I. railroad. FOr 14 years he worked in London for a hardware firm, and at the age of 75 was retired from the Steel and Iron Co. of Springfield. Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the H. D. Smith funeral home, Bainbridge, with the Rev. John Montgomery officiating. Burial will be in Bainbridge cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1:30 p.m. Friday. |
